When Katie woke her the next morning at seven, Fenella was happy to discover that she wasn’t as tired as she’d expected she would be. She gave the kitten her breakfast and then took her shower and got dressed.

“How was your evening?” Mona asked as Fenella put on her makeup.

Fenella winced as she jumped and drew a line of eyeliner across her forehead. “Oh, good morning,” she said. “I didn’t see you there.”

“Clearly,” Mona chuckled.

Fenella wiped away the mess before she replied. “The evening was, well, interesting. Tim knows some of the women involved in the case, so that was interesting. Then we went to hear the band perform and I ran into Carol Houston again. In the end, Daniel took her back to the station to answer more questions. I think the strangest part of the evening was that Jack had fun, though.”

Mona looked surprised and then shook her head. “Maybe he was just pretending to have fun in an effort to convince you to give him another chance. If you were to try again with him, he’d probably go right back to never wanting to do anything.”

“I think he truly was having fun,” Fenella told her. “He even went to the party at Mark’s after the gig, even though I came home and went to bed.”

“How very odd.”

“Yes, it was.”

“But tell me about Carol and what Tim knows about the suspects. Maybe we can work out who killed Peter Grady before Daniel does.”

“Let’s leave the case to Daniel. He’s the one who questioned Carol last night.”

“Why? Tell me everything.”

Fenella thought about refusing, but she knew that Mona loved playing detective. She gave her aunt a complete rundown of everything that Tim had said and then repeated the conversation she’d had with Carol in the ballroom.

“She actually wanted you to lie to the police,” Mona said. “I can’t believe she thought you’d agree.”

“She seemed desperate. I think she’s a good deal more interested in Matthew than he is in her.”

“And yet she was also involved with Dr. Grady. I really wish I could have met the man. He must have been incredibly attractive and charming,” Mona said.

“You should see if he’s still wandering around the spirit world,” Fenella suggested. “You’d be about the right age for him, I suppose.”

Mona’s ghost appeared to be somewhere in her mid-thirties, even though the woman had been over ninety when she’d died.

“It’s a tempting idea, but it might upset Max. You know I try not to upset Max.”

“Of course not,” Fenella agreed, wondering if Mona was telling the truth or not. “Although from what I’ve heard, you used to upset him quite regularly when you were both alive.”

Mona laughed. “We had a very volatile relationship, yes, but underneath it all was a firm foundation built on love and trust. Anyway, we’ve both mellowed a lot over the years. Max was ill for quite a long time, and we never had a single quarrel during his illness.”

As she didn’t need to pick up Jack
